A Walk Round the Lake
with my dogs, Moth and Milo
Sometimes it’s the routines in life that keep us together, stop us from falling apart and to stay grounded. This week I have engaged in the ritual of the everyday to keep any phantoms at the door. ‘Step no further — I am protected by the routines of daily living.’
Dogs are pretty good for that. Yes, my two have been stressful, their youthful energy and exurberance have been challenging to say the least, not to mention the recent vet bills. But despite all that, their doggy energy has had a calming influence, especially when they have been fed, watered and exercised and they are relaxing with you. These are cherished, routine moments — albeit somewhat fleeting.
As are the walks themselves. And after over three decades of living here we have recently discovered a new one. Well, not exactly discovered. We always knew, but never tried it. That is, the walk around the university grounds. With Moth getting stronger again, it seemed the right time to venture forth anew. It’s a reasonably long walk which is perfect for our needs, and intention to tire the beasts out sufficiently to allow us calm for the succeeding hours at home. And a beautiful walk…
