Moth and Milo earning their keep as I sleep through it

It was late afternoon, cold and dark. Our two dogs were making an infernal noise. Which isn’t particularly unusual. Each one seemed to be egging the other on to see whose bark was the loudest and most fearsome. Normally I allow them to do what comes naturally. After all, they are guarding their territory. And that happens to be mine also. I don’t want them to think they are doing something wrong and stop what they’re doing.

But the barking was insistent. And very annoying. It prevented me from drifting into a fluffy dreamland that was beckoning. I felt like admonishing them but, fortunately, was too close to sleep to react.

Eventually Laura, the responsible adult in the house, did the sensible thing and followed the two dogs to the front room to investigate. Four men (of the dodgy dodgirium variety) were standing together on the pavement outside, looking into our house. Our two dogs were at the window, looking back at them, in confrontation pose.

The pavement is close to the window and Laura heard them say.

‘I wouldn’t fancy it, not with that Rottweiler and Pitt Bull there.’

For the record, Milo is not a Pitt Bull — he is a sort of Staffie/Lurcher mix — but is often…
