Great article, with some interesting and valid observations. I finished an MA in creative writing with the Open University about 16 months ago. As you point out, it helped me develop discipline to create more work than I would not have accomplished had it not been for the course. It also gave me interesting insights into my own work as well as giving me the confidence to try out different genres. Learning more about research gave me the motivation to try out more historical narratives. But one of the most important aspects of the course was being part of a large community of writers who would offer feedback on your work. You also learn to grow a thicker skin, take constructive criticism and consequently grow as a writer. As well as offering feedback to others also helps you to develop your skills as a writer. Writing is all about practice. And with all the deadlines and exercises that are an integral part of such a course you certainly get a lot of that. Everyone is different, and no course can turn you into a successful, published writer. But for me the time and money invested in my masters was well worth it.
