Why do men have the highest rates of suicide?

A recent spat developed between a left leaning journalist and alt-right actor/politician. The details aren’t important. But it started on one of those political discussion, talk shows, briefly considering the high rates of male suicide. The female journalist was slightly dismissive and appeared unwilling to recognise it as an issue worthy of debate. A few days later an enraged actor turned alt-right politician launched an attack on her during a right wing news broadcast. Sadly this wasn’t through debating the issues but reducing the level of discussion to playground level, reviling her as a figure of sexual objectification. The subtext being as a woman she wasn’t even worthy of a receiving proper debate. As a woman she had to be treated as a sexual object.

It was a depressing snapshot of what is occurring across the Manosphere today, driven by a reactionary agenda, as well as a missed opportunity for a proper discussion on the high rates of male suicide.

The statistics are stark. Since the mid nineties three quarters of all suicides in the UK are male. It is the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45. Yet it is men between the ages of 50 and 54 who have the highest suicide rate.
