Echolyn are an American Prog band, first formed in 1989. The album, Mei, was released in 2002, consisting of one 50 minute piece, divided into a number of seamless sections. At the time of conception and release the band comprised of Christopher Buzby on keyboards and vocals, Brett Kull on guitars and vocals, Paul Ramsey on drums and percussion, and Ray Weston on vocals and bass. They also had a chamber orchestra that features prominently throughout the song. The orchestral score was written by Christopher Buzby and the lyrics were written by Brett Kull and Ray Weston.

I must confess, I have come rather late to this wonderful piece of music. In fact, only this year, during those warm summer months, have I fully got to grips with it. I bought the album about three years ago after being suitably seduced by the online chatter on various prog sites and YouTube channels.

I listened to it a couple of times and enjoyed the overall sound without properly accessing it. Then I put it to one side, life got in the way, and I forget to pick it up again. It was only through chance this year that I was reminded of it, and decided to give the album some proper attention.

The thing with this music is, although it isn’t hard or difficult stuff, you have to give it undivided attention, and play it…
