Trump and Fawkes: out to destroy government

In the UK, we remember 5th November for Guy Fawkes and his plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament. This year, the date will be remembered for another reason — the presidential election. And not just in the US. As one of the many US vassal states, it matters to us as well. Whether Trump wins or loses, the date will be remembered by us. Trump will take position alongside Guido Fawkes, to always be associated with this date.

In 1605, Fawkes was discovered in the cellars below Parliament, just as he was preparing to blow up the great and the good with vast amounts of gunpowder. He and his fellow conspirators planned to reduce King James I of England to small fleshy pieces and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. His plan was foiled. And he and his fellow Catholic plotters met sticky ends — and not King James.

I know there’s a difference between Trump and Fawkes. Of course there is. They’re on different sides of the Atlantic.

No, I’m not suggesting Trump is about to go sneaking under subterranean passageways beneath the pillars of power in order to blow it all up, but its certainly an accurate metaphor. His real intentions are hiding in plain sight. It is perfectly clear, barely concealed in jokes and asides. And, also, a basic…
