A few years ago I trained as a clinical hypnotherapist. My work in mental health, social care with local government was about to go down the pan. Years of austerity was taking its toll and squeezing services dry. After all, it was our fault for the banks imploding in 2008, right?

I’ve always been interested in hypnotherapy so I decided to invest in a course, as insurance against failing to be able to pay my mortgage. I guessed that not many people would take someone on in their late fifties so this seemed the best option. As it happened, I was saved the challenge of starting my own therapy business as the council realised it was more cost effective to keep our service going – something I could have told them for free and saved them a bundle on consultancy fees.

However I never regretted my decision to retrain. The course was fascinating. I gained invaluable skills and knowledge that have stayed with me and I am still using. It also remains a useful skill able to help family and friends should the need arise.
