Thanks you for that post, Megan. It must have been a difficult decision to write this but in doing so I have no doubt you will be helping many people who are struggling with this diagnosis. You are also playing an important part in helping to remove the stigma. I guess if the diagnosis of ‘Borderline Personality Disorder’ helps someone to get the right help and support then it has some merits. To some extent diagnosis seem to come and go over the years and to some extent are culturally driven. By that I don’t mean in any sense your emotional and behavioural problems aren’t real that require proper help and support. However no one should feel that their personality has a medicalised disorder. Over the last few years the number of mental health diagnosis has grown enormously. I don’t think this is due to people exhibiting more symptoms of so-called pathology but more to do with supporting the needs of the psychiatric professions and the demands of the pharmaceutical market for more clients i.e.capital growth. Fortunately in your case, your help and support is through talking therapies but too many people are addicted to prescribed medication that have little efficacy and create problems of their own. Sorry, I’m straying from your excellent article. I just feel angry how over-medicalised issues to do with people’s emotions and coping with our disordered, dysfunctional society has become. We live in a world of hyper-individualism so it’s also about treating the person exclusively rather than also taking a look at the environment and type of society where we are expected to thrive and flourish. Anyway take care. Seems like you making a success of your life whichever way you’ve been labelled. Your book on Making Money Writing for Medium has given me a much needed head start. So many thanks.
