The Drugs Don’t Work

They make you worse

The myth of a chemical imbalance causing depression and the consequent need for anti-depressant medication is one I was taught in my initial nurse training and continued to be taught over a variety of mental health courses up to my retirement. I spent a lifetime sitting with clients during their consultancy with doctors when the myth was reinforced.

This normally happened when the person, fed up with the side effects from the drug, took themselves off the drug and experienced a range of symptoms including a return of their anxiety or depression. At the consultancy, the doctor would patiently explain the error of their ways. What they were experiencing was a return of their underlying condition i.e. anxiety or depression. The doctor would conclude this demonstrated the need for them to continue with the medication. At which point, a new prescription would be quickly conjured. Thank you… Next patient, please!

And so the cycle would continue. As it still does today. The only people who benefit from this medical disinformation are the drug companies. As a result, they have a long term consumer. One who will be with them for decades, maybe even a lifetime.
