In ancient times, sigils were used as a pictorial representation of a deity or demon. Such as in the Lesser Key of Solomon there are 72 sigils illustrated as the occult symbol or signature of each demon. Such symbols are seen as the true name of the demon, or angel.
The power of a name is an important principle in folklore and magick. Certainly, the importance and potency of using a person’s proper name or a title are recognised in many non-occult spheres, in disciplines as diverse as psychology and business management. Its magical relevance and power are depicted in a Grim’s tale, Rumpelstiltskin, its source material going back 4000 years. In this ancient folk tale, the malignant imp loses his power once his name is discovered and declaimed. In medieval magick, the sigil was seen as the truest symbol of a magical entity’s name. Therefore using such a sigil allows the occultist, or magician, power over the entity.
Fast forward to today’s marketplace, with corporations jostling for space and recognition within the collective consciousness of the consumer.
