The fun and frolics of joining a writers group.

Last Autumn I joined a local writers group. It is something that I’ve meaning to do forever. Then two events coincided, giving me the necessary kick in the butt to walk the walk… and anymore cliches, step this way.

Firstly my retirement awarded me with more hours than I knew what to do with. But it was important to do something, right.? All those years of saying, ‘yeah, I would do that if it wasn’t for my work,’ became redundant overnight. There was no where no hide.

Secondly, I had just completely a Masters in Creative Writing with the OU and got used to hanging out with other writers, virtually speaking, and doing pitiless constructive critiques on each other’s work. Oh, the fun we had! When the course finished so did my network. And I missed it.

I’m glad to be a member. I’m glad I joined. The most important thing it offers is space to just talk with other writers about the ups and downs, highs and lows of writing. Most importantly of all, it gives me a boost to carry on, what is essentially, a lonely road. We all need that encouragement from time to time. Being in such a group stops that little nasty voice in your head from taking over (no, I’m not schizophrenic) and repeating

You can’t do that. You’re not a writer. You never will be.
